Post Kumbalangi, Kumbalam set for a tourism makeover KOCHI: After Kumbalangi, the state tourism department is planning to develop Kumbalam as a rural tourism destination. Government has sanctioned Rs 1.49 crore to Ernakulam District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) to develop the place. DTPC will set up a landscaped walkway at Kumbalam Park and will provide facilities like food court, play area for kids and a boat jetty. "Kumbalam is an untapped and unexplored destination and we want to develop it as a beautiful rural destination," said DTPC secretary T N Jayasankar. DTPC also plans to implement the project through private public partnership (PPP) mode. This will ensure professional management of the park for a minimum of 10 years. "The facelift of Kumbalam Park as a rural leisure space-cum-cultural interpretation corner is being done to create an open space and facilities for people from all walks of life. It will also provide value addition to Kumbalam, which is an upcoming rural tourism destination after Kumbalangi," added Jayasankar. Sources said as per rough estimates, Rs 59 lakh will be used to construct a walkway, Rs 3.2 lakh to build granite benches and Rs 20 lakh to build a boat jetty. Also, Rs 1 lakh will be used to construct a play area and Rs 6.65 lakh on food court, besides expenditure for plumbing, electrification and beautification works. DTPC has secured permissions to start work. "We have granted permission to DTPC to develop the area," said Kumbalam ward member V M Unnikrishnan.
