Post a film you like over five days or gap them if you like. And explain why each film has a particular significance while also nominating 4 people (youre it!) to take the challenge too. And heres my first pick for the 5 day spread out film challenge. Pan’s Labyrinth (2006) is as much of a fairytale as it is a story about how fairytales, and stories in general, clash with the fascism of post-Civil War Spain. Captain Vidal (Sergi López), the fascist antagonist, stands in the way of Ofelia (Ivana Baquero), the protagonist, as she fights to save her unborn brother, win her freedom, and reclaim her role as princess of the underworld. Pan’s Labyrinth is constructed within two parallel worlds, the temporal and the fantasy. These two worlds are polar opposites that repel each other to the core, and through the various techniques employed in Pan’s Labyrinth – the symbolism, the images, and the metaphors. The ideas of control (represented by time, ritual, fascism and religion) and permanence (represented by stories, youthful imagination and fantasy) clash and result in an unambiguous conclusion: stories are what make us human and fascism, being anti-story, is anti-human. Enrique Montiel, A Alex Quevedo, Chris Kneeland, Scott Parker.
