Post election survey by Ipsos... tl;dr - Erdoğan voters seem to live in another world for the rest of us Earthlings. While religion and economics are important factors for their electoral consistency, it seems the Erdoğan propaganda machine has been very successful (particularly as education levels drop) at convincing his supporters that he is in fact a man of peace, democracy, human rights and justice who is universally admired by the world... Anyway... now for the long part. Some statistics that stood out for me: *60.1% of voters with primary education voted for Erdogan, 48.3% of voters with secondary education and 37.2% of those with tertiary education. *78.8% of Erdoğan voters said they fully support everything Erdoğan does, whereas 12.6% said while they didnt fully support him, they felt more kinship with him than the other candidates. (See... I can actually understand the second group... fine, Erdoğan is like you so you vote for him. But at least you accept hes made some mistakes. The fact that over three fourths seem to think Erdoğan hasnt done anything wrong is very scary indeed.) *The most cited reason people voted for main contender Ihsanoğlu (36.7%) was that they were voting against another candidate. (No surprise here, the past several elections in Turkey have basically been Are you for Erdoğan or against him? Neither the opposition candidates nor their agenda seem to matter much). Now these ones are fascinating: * In the list of factors that participants said influenced their vote, the top six: they would bring domestic peace and stability (92.5%) their commitment to human rights and democracy (92.2%) their fight against corruption (89.2%) their international respectability (87%) their being secular (86.8%) and their being just (86.8%) are ALL factors that Erdogan failed miserably at... whereas factors of identity - the fact that their religious sect is one I approve of (61.5%), their piety (60%), that they are the same ethnicity as me (56%) - make up the bottom three reasons on deciding on a candidate. Plus, looking over the top factors stated by Erdoğan voters - while no.1 can be debated He has performed important services for Turkey (97.2%) - numbers 2 through 6 are ridiculous: he would bring domestic peace and stability (94%), his international respectability (92.7%), his commitment to human rights and democracy (91.9%), his fight against corruption (90.5%), and his being just (88.1%) - not to mention number 8 - his being secular (86.2%). This suggests that support for Erdoğan isnt coming from religious identity (though over three fourths did still state his sect and piety were important for them), but rather that the Erdoğan propaganda machine has been very successful. Basically, for Erdoğan voters, he IS a man who the world admires and who is a shining beacon of democracy and human rights who is busy fighting against corruption... ipsos.tr/downloads/pdf/IPSOS_SRI_2014Cumhurbaskanligi_Secimi_Sandik_Sonrasi_ArastirmasiVF.pdf
