Post horns like this one, made in Moravia in 1866, were traditionally used to signal the approach and departure of mail coaches and/or horseback-riding mail carriers. Composers of the 18th and19th centuries also wrote special pieces of music for these natural horns, including Mozarts post horn serenade (KV 320) and Mahlers off-stage solo in his third symphony. This particular post horn in B-flat was made for use by the postal service in Brünn, the capital of Moravia at the time. The bell features a cast coat-of-arms that depicts the Austrian double-eagle with crown, shield, sword and orb. #horn #posthorn #Moravia #mail
