PostDoctoral Position - Semiconductor Nanostructures Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt · Department 2.5 Semiconductor Physics and Magnetism ob description The Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) is the National Metrology Institute of the Federal Republic of Germany with scientific and technical service tasks. It furthers progress and reliability in metrology for society, the economy and science. For our Working Group 2.53 Low-dimensional Electron Systems of Department 2.5 Semiconductor Physics and Magnetism in Braunschweig, we are looking for a PostDoc for the field of Semiconductor Nanostructures to join us as soon as possible. This position is available on the basis of a 2-year fixed-term contract. The remuneration will be paid in accordance with remuneration group 13 TVöD Bund. PTBs Low-dimensional Electron Systems Working Group investigates quantum transport processes in low-dimensional semiconductor structures. One focus of the work is the ultrafast manipulation of single electrons in dynamic quantum dots with applications in metrology and quantum electronics. For these research activities, excellent equipment is available to the Working Group both for producing samples at PTBs own Clean Room Centre and for magnetotransport measurements at low temperatures. Your Duties: You will investigate a novel, PTB-developed semiconductor single-electron pump based on a dynamic quantum dot. Your activities will be aimed at improving the accuracy of the single-electron pump and at developing potential applications. To this end, you will help explain the transport and error mechanisms in the dynamic charging and discharging of single electrons on a semiconductor quantum dot and you will optimize the error rates of the single-electron pumps. In addition, you will contribute to integrating the single-electron pumps into complex circuits, especially to allow individual pump errors to be detected directly. You will also plan and realize new sub-projects in the field of single-electron pumps. The activities are part of a European research which is aimed at realizing a quantum standard of electric current. If you are interested in this position, please click on the APPLY button. The closing date for applications is 28 November 2014. Unfortunately, we cannot accept applications sent via e-mail. For further information, please contact Dr. H. W. Schumacher, phone: +49 (0)531 592-2500, or Dr. Frank Hohls, phone: +49 (0)531 592-2530 We are looking forward to your application! Desired skills and experience You have completed university studies of physics (with a focus on experimental physics) or electrical engineering with a very good grade. You have experimental experience in several of the following fields: Single-electron effects and quantum effects in nanostructures Electric transport investigations at extremely low temperatures (sub-kelvin) Manufacturing of nanostructures by means of lithography Planning and realizing measuring arrangements designed to measure extremely small electric signals or for dynamic measurements with high temporal resolution and/or at high frequencies Additional Experience: We expect you to have extensive experience in analysing large datasets, in the field of data acquisition, electronic measuring systems and LabView You have a good command of spoken and written English You have good communication skills; you are willing to work in a team and are ready to cooperate with national and international partners You must be fit for working in a cleanroom.
