Postcards from Home (©2013 Alex Bevan/Fiddlers Wynde Music BMI - all rights reserved) Shading his brow with a half salute In Navy fatigues, well worn flight deck truths His radar repairs give the pilots their eyes Should they venture through less than the friendlier skies The catapult hisses, another bird up Burners full throttle to get him on top Like the Star Spangled Banner … It gives you a thrill But when there’s only a dot and the air gets still He takes a deep breath and hums and old poem “On a wing and a prayer”… Lord, let him come home. After his watch he climbs down below To showers... and heads to where all sailors go Enlisted man’s mess and the chow line parade Then maybe a movie or cards to be played Out on a mission he can’t use the phone It’s most time in groups and little alone He’s not one for reading and never did smoke Plays some guitar... but can’t sell a joke And just before sleep he let’s his thoughts roam To familiar shores... and postcards from home One by one these American beauties Cascade in a line past his call to duty New York, New Orleans, The Grand Canyon Rift Shorelines and tan lines.. Hello from Ol’ Miss.… High staggered mountains... an old Texas Town Whitewater rafting... the Blue Ridge lookdowns The writing on back might be sparse but it’s plain They all say, I love you and all speak his name Drifting off slowly….the visions grow small Till the moment of sleep... and he’s off of the wall A moment to dream though his oath’s not repealed His own time to fly... his own time to heal To soon those eight bells take him topside again Back on the line where they’re bringin’ ‘em in All arrows gathered, all wheels on the deck It’s the outcome to work for, the hope you’d expect There’s no voyage home... still a lot to be done A full salute … now... the mail plane has come With three by five truths that are simple and known He’s waiting in line for postcards from home....
