Postdoctoral positions at Agriculture and Agri-Food Potato Research Centre Employer: Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (Government of Canada) Location: Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada Discipline: Potato Crop Ecosystem Entomology; Plant Physiology; Germplasm enhancement / Plant pathology Position Type: Full Time Job Type: Postdoctoral Fellow Duration: One year, with possibility of renewable for up to two more years Annual Salary $50,503 per year Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC), a department of the Canadian federal government, has a mandate to conduct research and develop technologies to achieve security of the food system, health of the environment and innovation for growth. Three postdoctoral positions at the AAFC Potato Research Centre (PRC) are available on: 1) Potato Crop Ecosystem Entomology; 2) Plant Physiology; 3) Germplasm Enhancement / Plant pathology. The PDF with entomology expertise would interface with the existing team at PRC in agronomy, potato crop protection, environmental health, germplasm development, pathology, and genomics at the Centre and across AAFC. The PDF would also work with other researchers at the interface of environmental and agronomic impacts on insect biodiversity. The PDF with strong expertise in plant physiology is to work with existing team (both molecular and non-molecular) at PRC to address plant response to environmental stresses (i.e., biotic and abiotic stresses) as well as the impacts on production, seed multiplication, quality, and tuber storage issues. The PDF is also expected to collaborate with scientists working on agri-environmental issues with expertise in soil science, hydrology, plant science and microbiology, and with specialists in germplasm enhancement (varieties tolerant to extreme weather conditions) and entomology (climatic tools for pest control). The PDF with germplasm enhancement/plant pathology is expected to conduct research on developing improved disease resistance phenotyping tools and evaluating the utility of DNA markers and genome selection for predicting disease resistance, while facilitating interaction with molecular scientists at the PRC. Expertise in plant pathology combined with genetics is especially desired as the PDF will work closely with a tightly integrated team of germplasm enhancement and genomics scientists to develop improved germplasm that combines disease (e.g., late blight) and pest resistance traits with acceptable agronomic and quality performance. The PDF would develop innovative strategies for transferring disease resistance traits from the wider gene pools of potato into germplasm adapted to Canada. Candidates must be eligible to hold a NSERC Governmental Laboratory Visiting Fellowship (nserc-crsng.gc.ca/students-etudiants/pd-np/laboratories-laboratoires/index_eng.asp ) and be able to start the position before the end of December 2014. Qualified candidates should submit applications to NSERC directly according to instructions at the website as soon as possible. The candidates should have strong background in the required areas, a record of peer-reviewed publications in international journals, be able to work both independently and collaboratively, be creative and motivated with good verbal, written, and presentation skills. Preference will be given to Canadian citizens and landed immigrants. Applicants should send an email with Curriculum Vitae and contact information for references attached to the address below by Monday September 22 indicating their intent to apply for the postdoctoral position.
