Posted 6-18-14 Donald Red Barry de Acosta, born January 11, 1912, was an American film and television actor. He was nicknamed Red after appearing as the first Red Ryder in the highly successful 1940 film Adventures of Red Ryder. The character as played in later films by Wild Bill Elliott and Allan Lane. He went on to bigger budget films following Red Ryder, but none reached his previous level of success. By the 1950s, he was a supporting actor instead of playing leads in westerns. Early in 1955, he appeared in an episode of the syndicated series, Stories of the Century, starring and narrated by Jim Davis. He also played in the 1956 western film Seven Men from Now, starring Randolph Scott. He guest starred in the ABC/Warner Brothers series Sugarfoot, starring Will Hutchins. He appeared four times in the ABC/WB western Colt .45 and the ABC/WB western series, Maverick with Jack Kelly and fellow guest star Buddy Ebsen. His voice in the television westerns sounded much like that of the character actor Dub Taylor. About this time, he also guest starred on two other ABC/WB dramas, Bourbon Street Beat and The Roaring 20s., as well as U. S. Marshal, starring John Bromfield, and the NBC education drama series, Mr. Novak, starring James Franciscus. In 1965, Barry was cast in the final episode of Mickey, an ABC sitcom starring Mickey Rooney. He was cast as a freeloading friend who had saved Mickeys life in World War II. In 1966, he played in the Western film Alvarez Kelly, and in 1968 he played a supporting role in Shalako, with Sean Connery. He played supporting roles in dozens of television series, particularly westerns. He appeared eight times on The Virginian, in the 1960s. He appeared in at least two episodes of Little House on the Prairie. He died on July 17, 1980, by suicide after a domestic dispute, in North Hollywood, California, at the age of 68.
