Posted on behalf of one who cares but isnt on LinkedIn - Oil & gas outfits use military tactics in dealing with locals To the Editor: In a Nov. 8 article on the CNBC website (CNBC), it was revealed that military Psychological Operations (PSYOPS) methods are being used on the residents of Pennsylvania to neutralize opposition to horizontal hydro-fracking. The information came from an oil and gas media relations conference in Houston. One speaker at the conference recommended the use of the Army and Marine Corps counterinsurgency manual, saying opposition to the fracking industry is an insurgency. Disinformation is the basic ingredient of PSYOPS. An essential element is the repetition of the lie. Fomenting hatred and distrust between factions of a society is another important strategy. Psychological Operations may utilize fear, force or the threat of force. PSYOPS methods attempt to confuse and demoralize the enemy. People are fed disinformation in a format that they will be inclined to believe, by sources that are set up to appear credible. Disinformation about fracking has been disseminated in our area. Blatant falsehoods, repeated by industry personnel, are not just misunderstandings or random lies, but sophisticated, strategic and highly aggressive methods of persuasion. For example, company representatives, and politicians funded by them, often repeat the absurd claim that there is not a shred of evidence that fracking causes water pollution, despite a huge body of data demonstrating clearly that fracking has caused a tremendous amount of serious water contamination. Although the facts are irrefutable, they repeat the falsehood. Representatives of a drilling company recently told several landowners in Athens County that there is nothing stronger than dish soap in fracking fluids, even though these fluids contain toluene, benzene and many other disease-causing agents. Intentionally making such utterly false statements is clearly disinformation. A landowner, who stands to make big money on the leasing of his mineral rights, would certainly want to believe fracking fluids are safe. We have been told repeatedly that fracking is coming, so we might as well lease our mineral rights and take the money. This has made many feel that resistance is futile. Corruption and complicity between industry and government regulatory agencies is coming into the public spotlight. As the horrors of h-fracking continue to surface, momentum for a ban is rapidly building. It has been implied that those who do not wish to endure the impacts of fracking are unpatriotic, ignorant or unappreciative. This pins a negative and inaccurate label on citizens who are attempting to protect their communitys quality of life. To divide and conquer by creating divisions in a target community is an effective PSYOPS strategy. A strong argument can be made for using PSYOPS techniques on an enemy population, to save the lives of American servicemen. To label Americans who wish to preserve the integrity of their land and communities as insurgents is outrageous. To use military psychological operations on Americans, in order to exploit their resources and blind them to the hazards involved, constitutes psychological warfare on American communities. We cannot have a functional reaction to it without being judged and labeled by... them (aka a jury of our inferiors) whereupon they are justified in doing whatever they want. Conduct yourself accordingly. By John Strohl
