Copy of a letter to the editor published in the Daily Gleaner: **** Use technology for translation and reduce out migration Re: Language quotas I first want to thank the negotiating team at the NB Union for your hard work on our behalf. No doubt, this is a tiring effort to get members a fair deal. That being said, I want to implore you to not go the way of ANB and forget about seniority when hiring new employees and trump seniority with language quotas. We need to be very careful not to alienate our unilingual professionals in a province that likes to tout equality for both language groups, but in reality is far from equal. It is the job of the union to provide leadership and support to all of it’s dues paying members, not only those who can speak both languages. In this day and age, there are many ways to offer service in both languages without dismissing the experience and seniority of our professional work force. The use of technology to translate into many languages, not just French and English, must be explored and utilized in order to save the out migration of our skilled work force. It would be negligent on the part of the union to not implore these suggestions to the government when discussing language requirements in hiring employees. Please take the high road and lead, and not follow, to ensure we move forward and not backwards with regards to our experienced work force. Show our members that you are here to protect us all, not just a select group who have the luxury of being able to speak more than one language.
