Posting 1476 Here is a very memorable, beautiful duet Varuvaay mana mohana from the past, remarkably well rendered by MLV & V.N.Sundaram that featured in the Jupiter Films produced Inspector (1953). The Music Director was the legend G. Ramanatha Iyer. One really envies those who lived & lounged in that era when such classical based melodies were brought out, in their exhilarating forms, by very many unsung music directors, who were in their own right, legends. It was rather pitiful these music composers all enjoyed very limited fanfare, in an era that was far from where our media infested life is today! The film Inspector was based on the original stage play of TKS Brothers. Talking of MLV, she became a play back singer by 1946, but her first big hit was Ellam Inbamayam, a delectable Ragamalika from N.S.Krishnan produced & directed film Manamagal (1951). In the very film she also rendered Subramania Bharathiyars evergreen composition, Chinnanchiru Kiliyae, along with V.N. Sundaram, in ragamalika of Kapi, Maand, Vasantha, Tilang and Sivaranjani. She had had very many film hits to her credit, notable of which were Parkadal Alaimele, Ayya Sami, Konjum purave, Senthamarai Kannanae, Vanna Tamizh and Adum Arul Jothi, besides more. The MLV-VNS combination worked in other songs as well such as Paavi Enum Padupaavi’ from Manamagal & ‘Varuvaay Manamohana’ from Inspector. As for V.N.Sundaram, born in Vishalur, a village near Kumbakonam, grew up listening to great Nadhaswara maestros such as Thiruvenkadu Subramania Pillai & Rajarathinam Pillai. He was a singer cum actor in the boys company’, a touring stage troupe of young boys whose high pitched voices made them reach the biggest audiences in those mike-less days! youtu.be/DyQbw2bhaAw
