Posting by Evelyn Earle Shoup: I have (had) friends who call themselves conservative Republicans. Some are so filled with criticism of teachers, education, the President, the Health Care Act, that they say things filled with prejudice and are outright lies. They hear some of these things at their church, where the minister veers off the topic and gets into politics. Im not going to repeat them here because they are so vile and disgusting. When I spoke up-I was blasted by 3 of them at once, in public. I was shocked because one of these people draws a very good govt pension, yet hes against teachers having their state pensions. He served on a BOE many times over-and he has so much disrespect for teachers that he should never have been on that board ever. Another kept saying, there you go, its all about you teachers and education. Another said, theres no such thing as pensions any more because no one can afford to fund them. I replied that its our money, held out of our paychecks-put there for retirement. These 3 were-a banker, a businessman, and a retired postmaster. Problem was-no one else said a word in my defense of the President, teachers, education, Mrs. Clinton, retirement pensions, health care reform, gun reform-they sat there-because I live in conservative Kansas where many are afraid to speak up-less they offend these kind of people. Not me-I dont give a darn what they think. I will not sit by and listen to this any more. Not speaking up means that you agree with them, and thats the problem. We cant bring about change from the destructive actions of Kansas Gov. Brownback and our legislature, and the Republicans in Congress, and the Fox News, until we develop a backbone, speak up, and get out the correct information, and VOTE!
