The theme of the event is “Money, Politics and Colonialism, Inc.” we will focus on why money + politics ends up perpetuating the Military Industrial Complex (MIC) and what unlikely and adverse effects this has on economies beyond the blurry-blind rage of missile fire and mass media. From America’s gun-for-hire coup of Hawaii to Age of the Atomic Bomb to the War on Terror, private wealth, military contractors, Hollywood actors and their booster films (e.g. John Wayne’s ‘Sands of Iwo Jima’), retired generals and politicians have found clever ways to justify increased expenditures in this death-based industry. Towering above all US budgetary concerns, the MIC ends up heedlessly growing at the expense of life-based concerns like social security, education, and healthcare.
