Postscript: Just a few observations on todays standoff - personal notes of a sort. First: great respect to Randall County and how they handled this intense situation. The last thing they wanted to do was kill this man. They did everything in their power to not to - and still protect the people of Randall County. Even after he came out and fired shots at the helicopter and at their entry team, they pulled back. They took their time, analyzed the threat, deployed the proper non-lethal assets and got the job done. Although I was on scene and I could hear and see everything that was going on, they took the time to keep us all informed. Special thanks to Danny Alexander. Secondly, special thanks to al the residents who offered me food and water and even a bathroom break. One couple even gave me a chocolate chip cookie. Even though they had to evacuate their homes on a holiday weekend and endure this intense situation happening on their street, they were kind and caring and looked after me. My vehicle became the unintentional gathering point for residents because I had my scanner on and everyone wanted to listen in. When I wasnt posting or shooting video I was interpreting what the tactical team was communicating back to the command center and DPS 109 which was hovering above us. Ive been listening to police communications so long, I know their radio shorthand like it was a second language. That esoteric skill came in quite handy tonight. Also - extra special thanks to Jill Idol who was my reporter today. She not only did an excellent job but she brought me a camera, SD cards and batteries on what turned out to be a very long standoff. Stay tuned to Pro News 7 for additional details as they are released.
