Potato Guns in Combat? First used in combat on August 28, 1897, the dynamite gun was an experimental breech loading artillery piece that used compressed air to launch a projectile containing gelatinous dynamite. The cannon itself is technically misnamed since it in no way uses or launches dynamite. Instead, the cannon is powered by compressed air, fueled by compressed air. Furthermore, the shells were mage from a type of nitroglycerine based gelatin with either a time delay or percussion fuse. The U.S. Government purchased 16 Sims-Dudley Dynamite guns for use in the U.S. Army, receiving 100 rounds of ammunition along with the gun. Though a powerful weapon, the gun was often prone to breakdown as well as poor range and took several hours to prepare the gun after only a few shots were fired. Due to this, the Dynamite gun saw little action on the field and with their creation coinciding with the creation of high explosives, they were eventually deemed obsolete.
