Power crisis: Protestors attacked Receiving Station Police registers case Kulgam, Dec 31, CNS: Protests erupted in South Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Wednesday afternoon against the power woes, when hundreds of residents from many villages blocked traffic on Anantnag-Kulgam road and attacked power receiving station at Matalhama hamlet, prompting police to register a case against the miscreants. Eyewitnesses told CNS that residents of Qaimouh, Khudwani and other adjacent areas blocked the road and staged a massive protest against Power Development Department. According to protestors scores of areas of Kulgam have been reeling under darkness from past two weeks while PDD authorities are in deep slumber. Reports said that scores of people made their entry into Matalhama Power Receiving Station and ransacked the equipments there. A PDD official told CNS that protestors not only smashed the window panes but also caused damage to official records. The angry protestors raised slogans against the PDD and claimed that they have been compelled to live in the dark from past two weeks and demanded proper power supply in their areas. The traffic came to stand still for hours causing great inconvenience to the commuters. DySP Headquarters Kulgam, Irshad Ahmed Rather told CNS that a case has been registered against the miscreants responsible for causing damage to the Receiving Station. “Miscreants have been identified and they will be arrested soon,” he said. Meanwhile, Executive Engineer PDD Kulgam said that some miscreants caused damage Receiving Station as a result they were forced to snap the power supply to different areas. “How can we supply power to these areas when people resort to violence and cause damage to the power stations,” he said.(CNS)
