Powerful silent demonstration by the students at Huston-Tillotson - TopicsExpress

Powerful silent demonstration by the students at Huston-Tillotson University yesterday. Students donned hoodies to represent Trayvon Martin, raised dont shoot hands to represent Michael Brown, and fell to the ground to represent Eric Garner. There was palpable emotion in the air as the demonstration took place, especially with Austin in the background--a city that, for all of its wacky, open-minded progressiveness, has a pretty sordid history of segregation and racial injustice (see Texas Monthly piece by Cecilia Balli if youre curious). Austin still has a long way to go in addressing rapid gentrification of historically black and Hispanic areas, police violence/profiling against black citizens, and systemic racism in governance. I felt so inspired witnessing HT students add their voices to the discussion yesterday. Leadership by people of color is so vitally needed in this city. Please share widely and help amplify their voices in whatever way you can. #blacklivesmatter
