Powerful speech by Rotterdams mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb last evening on the demonstration triggered by the Charlie Hebdo massacre. Watch him (at 158) address the Parisians and the French in their (and his) native language. And bear in mind that Aboutaleb is the son of an Berber imam, who was born in Morocco and only came to Holland when he was 15 years old. He made an impressive political career and is widely respected across many layers of Dutch society. It is heart-warming and comforting to see (part of) the Dutch Muslim community assume their responsibility today. In them and in him, I (want to) see the future face of Islam. Historians may some day see Al Qaeda and IS as the catalysts if a more dignified, contemporary and yes - normal (for events like the one yesterday are just barbaric and not of this age) Islam.
