Poziv na suradnju - kolegi iz Njemačke treba pomoć oko sljedećeg (tko može pomoći neka se javi porukom): I am looking for some advices for further research of German war crimes 1943 in the area of Krapina. I am an historian at the moment working for the University of Konstanz on a biography of Hans Robert Jauß (1921-1997). Jauß has been a member of the SS from 1939 to 1945. His SS membership is publically known since mid-1990th. In 1943 Jauß has been as a company commander (rank: SS-Obersturmführer) at Croatia (NDH). His unit has been the 4th Company within the SS-Freiwilligen-Panzergrenadier-Regiment 48 „General Seyffardt“ (in the Battailon of SS-Hauptsturmführer Hans-Joachim Rühle von Lilienstern), 4. Freiwilligen-Panzergrenadier-Brigade Nederland (SS-Brigadeführer Jürgen Wagner). The majority of these SS men were Dutch volunteers, led and commanded by German SS officers. In documents at the German Federal Archive (Military Archive; Bundesarchiv Militärarchiv) at Freiburg im Breisgau, I located the war diaries (Kriegstagebuch) of the 4. Freiwilligen-Panzergrenadier-Brigade Nederland. The actions of that formation are detailed described and there are clear indications that they conducted so called Sühnemaßnahmen (“severe sanction”) in the area of Krapina, especially in the village of Petrovsko which normally means, destroying of the village, killing of the inhabitants, looting and seizing the cattle. Now, I would like to learn more about that incidents and what had happened there. Was there a war crime, were there any inhabitants murdered? It is well known, that formations of the Waffen SS killed women and children as well. Area of operation: Fascist Croatia (NDH) Time frame: September to November 1943 Locations: Grdenci, Krapina, Samobor und Petrovsko. I already wrote to the Arhiv Jugoslavije Beograd, Vase Pelagića 33, 11000 Belgrade, who informed me, that there are no files of that SS unit nor any post war investigation or trial file/records. That would indicate that there was no special investigation or trial by a Yugoslavia court. But I don´t know, how the Serbian archives are working and maybe there are still some restrictions to provide information to the public. I also wrote to the municipality of Krapina some weeks ago, but got no reply yet. Do you know if there is any archive in Croatia, which might have files about that time period and German war crimes? Is there any Croatian historian who is a specialist on that field and who might be able to help with further information? Do you have any advice for me, how to learn more about the events in Krapina in 1943? For sure I have to visit the area by my own – maybe there are any memorials at Krapina.
