Practice the Golden Rule By Scott McChrystal Do to others as you would have them do to you (Luke 6:31, NIV). Relationships within the military environment can be tough at times. In certain respects this is understandable. The military is highly mission-oriented, and ultimately the main purpose is to win our nations wars. Unchecked, this can foster a climate that tends to reward behavior that is task-oriented, not people-oriented. However, the greatest resource in any organization, military or otherwise, is people. It is essential to treat one another with respect. As America becomes more culturally diverse, Army leaders must be aware that they will deal with people from a wider range of ethnic, racial, and religious backgrounds. Respect is a universal language. But this is nothing new. In His Sermon on the Mount, Jesus nails the key to having good relationships with others. Paraphrased, He simply tells us to treat others as we would like to be treated. As simple as this principle sounds, doing it is not always so easy. People can be difficult. At a personal level, a good place to start might be to ask yourself and the Lord this question: Do I treat all people with respect? — Chaplain Col. (Ret.)
