Praise be to Allah: Tahajjud The time of tahajjud starts after obligatory prayer of isha , and extends till dawn. There is no specific time for this prayer so it may be performed at any time of night but the preferred time is the last third of the night.its not mandatory to sleep but Waajib before tahajjud but you can sleep even for 5 min if you wish, its sunnah..and you can offer tahajjud even after isha.wat counts is your intention.there is no specific numbers of rakah of this night prayer but Prophet (peace be upon him) never prayed more than Eleven rakat during ramadhan or any other time.the sunnah is to be performed in sets of two rakah.it is recommended to shorten first two rakah making the remaining rakah longer. And then end it with one rakah of witr.one may also make dua e qunoot in witr if he likes. The person who does not memorize much of Quran may recite many short surahs in one rakah.there is no special dua... Allah knows the best Praise be to Allaah. If the Muslim prays Witr then he wants to pray qiyaam al-layl after that, he should pray them two by two, and he does not have to repeat Witr. Shaykh Ibn Baaz was asked: If I have prayed Witr at the beginning of the night, then I get up to pray qiyaam at the end of the night, how should I pray? He replied: If you have prayed Witr at the beginning of the night then Allaah enables you to get up at the end of the night, then pray whatever you can two by two – without Witr, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “There cannot be no two Witrs in one night.” And Allah knows the best Tahajjud is the BEST way to ask Allah for anything. You know why? Because Allah sees that how His servants have woken up in the last third of the night just to praise Him and seek His pleasure and ask only from Him. Excellence of night prayer( Tahajjud) “Great rewards and merits have been promised for the night prayer. Allah descends to the lowest heaven in the latter part of the night and invites invocation and petitions. Therefore the latter part of the night, specially the middle of the latter half of the night is opportune moment for acceptance of prayers. There is a moment in the night in which the prayer of a devotee is accepted. Night prayer expiates and prevents sins. The honourable among the Muslims are those learned in the Quran and those who pray at night.” There are so many narrated hadiths (Our Prophet’s (pbuh) sayings and deeds) about the virtue of the tahajjud prayer. One of the meanings of a hadith among them is as follows: “When one third of the night remains, every night, Our Lord, Allah, the All-Mighty says as follows till the dawn to break: ‘Whoever wants me something, I shall give. Whoever supplicates to me, I shall accept his/her pray. Whoever repents, I shall forgive him/her.’” The narrator of that hadith Hazrath Ebu Hurayra (may Allah grant him peace) adds the following sentence: “For this reason, the companions of Our Prophet (pbuh) used to prefer performing prayer at the end of the night rather than before the night.” (Ibni Mace, Ikamatu’s-Salat: 182). Al-Hasan said: “We do not know of any deed more difficult than the struggle to stay up at night or to spend money.” It was said to him, “Why do the mutahajjadeen (those who pray Tahajjud at night) have the most beautiful faces?” He said, “Because they spend time alone with the Most Merciful, so He adorns them with some of His light. Allah knows the best.
