Prayer and the Word Acts 6:4 “But we will give ourselves continually to prayer and the ministry of the Word.” (NKJV) October 26, 2013 Give Attention to the Word of God Scripture Reading of the Day: 1st Timothy 4:12 – 16 Scripture Verse of the Day: 1st Timothy 4:13 – “Till I come, give attention to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.” In this passage Paul is writing to his son in the faith Timothy about his work in the ministry and how he should conduct himself in the church. Paul wants Timothy to be an example to the church of Christianity. As we look at verse thirteen, we need to consider the things said to Timothy are given for our understanding as well. The first thing Paul says to Timothy is, “Till I come…” Apparently Paul was planning to make a trip to where Timothy was pastoring at the time. Paul wants Timothy to do the following things till he comes. Now Paul is not coming to visit us any time soon, but he does visit us through his letters to the churches which are written to each of our churches today. The second thing Paul says is, “…give attention to reading…” What did Paul want Timothy to read and us to read? Well for Timothy this would include the Law and the Prophets, Paul’s letters, and any things written about the Lord Jesus Christ. Today, we have the advantage of having the Bible which includes all these things and more. The third thing Paul says to Timothy is, “…to exhortation…” Paul wants Timothy to exhort his church members to be saved, to follow the teaching of the Lord, and to live a life acceptable to the Lord. This is something that preachers should continue to do, but many today just preach things people want to hear which leaves God’s people weak at the best. The final thing Paul tells Timothy is, “…to doctrine.” Doctrine is nothing more than what we actually believe and instructing us in our beliefs. We need to give more attention to doctrine in our day and age. The biggest problems Christians face today is they do not know what they believe. The things we need to know is the doctrine of salvation, the doctrine of God, the doctrine of the word of God, and the doctrine of the Holy Spirit to name just a few.
