Amen There is a famous German Play Biedermann und die Brandnstifter ( Biedermann and the Firebugs) by Max Frisch (1953). It is an allegory of how the culture of Goethe and Bach was lulled into letting the Nazis “firebugs” into the house to burn it down. Recent events, internationally, nationally and in my immediate sphere have convinced me that we have already let Schmitz and Eisenring in the house. And like the self-deluded Biedermann we are aiding the Arsonists in setting the fuse, convinced like Biedermann that our magnanimous secular moral superiority will save us. I apologize for the uncharacteristic dark tone- but there it is. BTW you Pop-culturalists will be happy to know that Benedict Cumberbatch stared as the Arsonist Eisenring in the 2007 London Revival.
