Prayer is first and foremost about encountering God and growing in our relationship with Him. It was never meant to be duty-based or merely results-oriented. Prayer is the place we will most feel His presence and receive love from Him as we develop more understanding of what He is really like. It is the place where we receive fresh insight into His heart and where new desires in our heart are formed. Prayer positions us to be energized to love God and people. This is a foundational principle of prayer. The call to a life of prayer is a call to participate in the love that has burned in God’s heart forever. From eternity past, each Person of the Trinity has loved the other Members with all His heart, mind, and strength. The first and foremost reality in all of God’s relationships, both within the Godhead and with us, is wholehearted love. The purity and passion of this love is the foundational reality of the kingdom of God. It is the very love in which we are called to participate. When God called us to partner with Him in ruling this world through prayer, He called us to participate in the fellowship of this love.
