Prayers for this week - Brooklyn is with a mission team from our church currently in Nashville serving a church plant, seeking out houses of peace that are open to the gospel. So proud of how my baby girl is spending her 12th birthday! Elijah begins a new chemo drug this morning. Three times this week and three times next week he must travel to the hospital to receive an inter muscular shot in his leg with erwinia asparaginase. This is the replacement for the chemo that he had an allergic reaction to last month. So instead of one trip and a single bag through IV, he gets to do six trips with six shots, six days of sitting around a hospital making sure that nothing goes wrong. Its definitely a walk of endurance. Two nights ago the boys and I read the story of Joseph from the Storybook Bible. Afterwards I mentioned to Elijah how even when things looked like they were going terribly for Joseph, God was using it for good. I said I think thats whats happening with Elijahs leukemia. Elijah was shocked and confused by this. He really wanted to know what God was doing for good. He wasnt denying it, he just really wanted to know. Broke my heart to see my little guy search for some meaning in his sickness. We talked for some time about it, and I told him how I have been updating people about whats going on. I said that some of the good things that I know about include how weve got to see Jesus take care of us, how weve gotten to spend more time together, and especially how God is using this to cause more people to pray. I told him that people have shared that theyve never prayed to God so much in their life as they have for Elijah. People are finding their faith in Jesus strengthened, they are learning to trust God more, and we are getting to share Jesus with people who dont yet know him. I said that when Elijah is older, he is going to come across all kinds of people who are sick or who have cancer, and he will be able to share how he had Leukemia and Jesus took care of him and healed him. We finished the night out by praying, with Elijah asking the people would come to know God because of his sickness. My heart melted listening to my young man pray prayers that most grownups never manage. I dont really know what else to say, except that I pray that you might find Christ in the middle of your circumstances. I pray that you might think of others in the midst of whatever good or bad day youre having. And I would ask you to pray that the work of God would be so visibly evident to my little boy that for the rest of his life he would walk in powerful confidence that Jesus is real, He is active, and that He can be trusted. Oh, and for this new nasty drug to have no negative reactions with his body, kill the leukemia and leave everything else alone. thank you
