Praying Through Acts: Acts 17:10-21 Father, so often an idea can easily become an idol. Like the people of Athens, whose city was filled with both, we find ourselves in our modern times inundated with “Athens gone global!” We seem to live in a world where competing religious beliefs and philosophical ideas abound and flourish. Every body has their own way of looking at life; their own way of interpreting the world. And no matter how much each of those ideas smack up against each other and contradict one another they determinedly press on in their dogged commitment to believe what they want to believe. So help us to navigate the crowded waterways of this world so that we do not become part of the “marine salvage” that founder in the shallows of silliness, idiocy, and falsities. Instead, may we center our very lives on the One who is the Truth embodied and the Truth resurrected and alive! For in him is found the depth that our human heart is made to sail in! In Jesus, all of life comes together, finds harmony, and gains perspective. He is the one who has anchored us in better promises, and in him the hope of the planet finds its focus and meaning. Truly, dear Jesus, you are the helmsman of hope that safely navigates, as the able seaman, through the uncharted waters of this life! In you all of the ancient prophecies find fulfillment and all the worthy, enduring ideas build on your foundation. And just like those who called Paul a “babbler,” or “word-scatterer,” the truth be told, the accusers taunt becomes his own title. For unlike the modern philosopher who feasts at the banquet table of competing ideas, attempting to glue together scraps of ideas into a futile quest at cohesive and meaningful thought, we have found in you, dear Jesus, the “theory of everything” and the love of a lifetime! In Jesus name, AMEN!
