Predictably, our daily rains in AZ wine country have given rise to a nice crop of weeds. With so much foliage and fruit, we are reluctant to use sprays. Accordingly, we use the hands and the hoe. With soft, moistened ground the weeds come out easily. There are five primary weeds we battle with in our vineyards, and the weeds are different between the Sonoita/Elgin and Kansas Settlement (Willcox) viticultural area. In Sonoita/Elgin, we battle ragweed almost exclusively, in addition to various grasses. In the Willcox area, we wage a fierce war against hog potato, silver thorn nightshade, tumbleweed and pigweed. Flying Leap Vineyards was founded in 2010 by three former military pilot with a shared goal of establishing a vibrant new wine company based on self-sourced viticulture and extraordinary, high quality winemaking. We grow a vast portfolio of winegrapes on our ranches in southern & southeastern Arizona, and we produce a delicious array of finely-crafted, ultra premium wines from our harvests. In 2015, we are bringing a distillery to wine country, where we will produce exquisite spirits from our own grape harvests and locally-sourced, organic grains.
