Predictions for the death of jazz have been common since the 60s. - TopicsExpress

Predictions for the death of jazz have been common since the 60s. I dunno...some of the issue seems to be that few artists have figured out how to take advantage of the changes in tech. Look at Louis CKs standup show he produced himself at the Beacon a few years back. He funded it himself and sold it exclusively on his own website. Now hes leased it to Netflix to continue the revenue stream. That seems pretty smart if you have the upstart cash. If you dont crowdsource the initial cash to do it with. Garth Brooks is doing something very similar with his upcoming tour. Hes never allowed streaming services to have his music. You cant buy his music on amazon, itunes, etc. and you cannot hear it on the streaming stations, either. As a result, his fans are now chomping at the bit to purchase his tunes digitally and hes getting ready to sell them exclusively at his website. Hes going to tour the world for a few years promoting his website and driving all his fans to it. Theyve both skipped the digital distribution and figured out a way to stay in control of the sales. No sharing. Songwriters in Nashville were lamenting these changes 10 years ago. If theyd just combined forces and figured out ways to champion the tech rather than spite it, maybe theyd be in a better situation now. Obviously, the same is very true for the declining influence of record labels. Finally, at some point art music like classical and jazz are going to have to face facts that their audience is too small to support their music directly. These genres are going to have do a better job selling their importance to our culture to rich cats. Thats how fine art works. Can you think of an art museum that funds everything off attendance? I cant think of one. Same is true for symphony orchestras - they cant survive on ticket sales alone. Fine arts have always lived with a patronage system and nothing has really changed because their audiences STILL arent big enough to support them directly.
