Pregnancy tussle: Woman opts for out-of-court settlement Eighteen-year-old Mary Yohana, of Gurku village in Nasarawa State told a Grade 1 Area Court in the state that she had settled her pregnancy case with her 22-year-old boyfriend, Silas Nwigwe. At the resumption of hearing, Mary said she was no longer interested in the suit she instituted against Nwigwe. “We have settled the issue between us, therefore, we want the court to discontinue with the case.” The judge, Mr Albert Maga, granted her wish and struck out the case. “Since the plaintiff has indicated she’s no longer interested in the case, the matter is hereby struck out,’’ Maga said. It would be recalled that Yohana sued her boyfriend on June 13 for intimidating and impregnating her. In her complaint, she said Nwigwe was her boyfriend with whom she was living at Gurku village. “I am six weeks pregnant. He got me pregnant and later said he’s no longer interested in the relationship. “He further denied responsibility of the pregnancy and threatened to kill me if I don’t desist from saying the pregnancy is his.” Yohana had earlier told the court that on June 12 at about 11:00 p.m., the accused beat her and pushed her out of his house. “We were living together and I don’t have any other boyfriend. “After beating me in the night, I ran into a room belonging to our landlord’s children and spent the night there,” she said. The accused had pleaded not guilty to the charge, saying, “She used to be my girlfriend, but her father and my mother warned us to stop dating each other. “They said we were too young, so I heeded their warning; but she will never let me be,” he claimed.
