Pregnant Chicago teachers claim unfair treatment The U.S. Justice Department has filed a pregnancy discrimination lawsuit against the Chicago Board of Education. The lawsuit filed Tuesday in Chicago says the principal of a northwest Chicago elementary school subjected pregnant teachers to lower performance evaluations and threatened their termination. The complaint says Principal Mary Weaver of Scammon Elementary responded to one teacher’s announcement of her pregnancy by saying, “I can’t believe you are doing this to me.” The principal repeatedly asked a teacher who was expressing breast milk for her child: “That isn’t over yet?” A Chicago Public Schools spokesman didn’t immediately respond. The lawsuit stems from complaints filed with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. The Justice Department is seeking monetary damages and a court order requiring the school board to develop policies to prevent pregnancy discrimination. (Copyright 2014 The Associated Press.
