Prejudice against the color of the skin is life imprisonment for - TopicsExpress

Prejudice against the color of the skin is life imprisonment for the victim. As a human race who pride themselves as intelligent its a shame. My heart went out to Anita who came to see me. She has spinal shrivelling( if you remember I wrote about how hugging stops spinal degeneration), back aches and piles. She is the Pirncipal of a reputed college in Gawhati and politically connected. She is courageous and fights for her rights. She has even spoken up against powerful student leaders in her state. Yet, she says, I am a Chuha (mouse ) where it comes to my husband. She lives a life of contradiction. At her birth, the response of her parents was, She is so dark skinned, we will have a tough time finding a match for her. This primal response led to her being the black sheep of her family. Eight years later when her fair skinned brother was born, it became worse. She was consistently told that she was no good. She will never be happy. This is called a parental injunction. This works like an injection which pierces ones heart. Parents for little children are like God. They take their word like gospel truth. Anita excelled in her studies. She got into Presidency Colllge in Kolkata. She passed her humanities with a gold medal. Her climb in her academics helped her to survive and would sustain the onslaught which was to come. A man approached her family to marry her. He had lied about his qualifications and status. The family was keen as their dark sheep was to be wed. Anita didnt like the man but the thought of being free from the shackles of her abuse motivated to say yes. This didnt last for too long as the man turned out to be a worse perpetrator. He was fair skinned and started throwing her arrows about her dark skin. She was depressed. She attempted suicide thrice but failed. She realized that she must become fianiclaly independant if she ever has to susrvie. She studied inspite of the abuse. There was no physical intimacy for many years till his parents intervened. The husband complied and in a short time Anita got pregnant. The intimacy was short lived and her husband started staying in a separate bedroom. She has never understood why he married her. She has a daughter who is fair skinned who sides with her father. Anita became isolated. Anita continued to steadily climb up in her career and today she can live separate with dignity but yet she chooses to live with her abusive husband. She is carrying her injunction, Dont exist or Dont be you in her heart. This has bound her knowing full well that she can opt out of this situation. Be careful if you are a parent, what you are saying to your children. They take it as the truth. Remember a gold medal is not a guarantee to a successful life but golden words are!
