Preliminary data from the state DOT shows 55 people lost their lives along Wisconsin roadways last month compared to the 75 traffic fatalities recorded in July of last year. Through the first seven months, traffic crashes have claimed 284 lives in Wisconsin – down about 15 percent compared to the 339 fatalities over the same period last year. Speeding and failing to wear a seat belt are among the most common traffic citations issued in Wisconsin. Of the more than 400-thousand citations entered into driver records through the first half of the year, about 20-percent were for speed-related offenses. This includes about 48-thousand citations for speeding between 11 and 19 miles per hour over the limit and 26-thousand citations for going one to ten over. Over nine thousand drivers were ticketed for speeding 20 or more miles per hour over the limit. The second most frequent citation entered into driver records was for failure to fasten a safety belt. More than 44-thousand people were cited for failing to buckle-up over the first six months of this year.
