Premium Times Newspaper (Thursday, November 14, 2013 ) ~~~~Jonathan campaigns for Nwoye, promises credible polls in Anambra President Goodluck Jonathan on Wednesday led leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to another round of campaign in Anambra State and assured the people of the state of a free, fair, and credible election on Saturday. Addressing the supporters of the party at a mega rally in the commercial city of Onitsha, Mr. Jonathan said he was committed to a level-playing field for all the parties presenting candidates in the election. Mr. Jonathan was in Anambra barely five days after his deputy, Namadi Sambo, similarly led the 60-member PDP Campaign Committee to campaign in the state. Mr. Sambo and the National Chairman of the PDP, Bamanga Tukur, also presented the party’s candidate, Tony Nwoye, to its supporters. The president urged the people of Anambra to work hard and ensure that the next governor of the state was elected on the platform of the PDP. Stating that the election was holding on November 16 which was the birthday of a former President of Nigeria, Nnamdi Azikiwe, Mr. Jonathan asked Anambra residents to vote massively for Mr. Nwoye whom he described as a vibrant young man with the zeal to serve. ”This election is special in the sense that it is holding on Nov. 16 when one of the greatest leaders of the country, former President Nnamdi Azikiwe, was born,” he said. “It will be a very good birthday gift for Great Zik and will bring Anambra State forward if you vote Comrade Tony Nwoye and the PDP,’’ he said. He dispelled the rumour that some people were recruiting youth from neigbouring states to cause mayhem during the election even as he urged the people to ensure one-man, one vote. Speaking earlier, Mr. Tukur pleaded with Anambra residents to vote PDP, which he said was in a hurry to take over power in the state with a view to bringing uncommon transformation to the state. “PDP is in a hurry to take over Anambra as one of the states being controlled by the party after November 16,’’ he said. The national chairman assured the traders in Anambra of the readiness of a PDP administration in the state to make the Onitsha River Port functional for further economic development. “Do not continue to remain outside the fold; return back to your main umbrella and get your development. “That is why we insisted on free and credible primary election to make sure that whoever emerges will be a man who will be acceptable by all. We must thank Mr. President for making it possible,” Mr. Tukur said. The Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum and Governor of Akwa Ibom, Godswill Akpabio, who also addressed the rally, noted that Anambra was a PDP state in1999, adding that the party was set to re-capture it. Mr. Nwoye assured the people that he would revolutionise the state and provide adequate security. He also promised to conduct local government elections within six months, if elected. Noting that Anambra State had the highest youth unemployment figure in the country, the governorship candidate said through his youth empowerment scheme, he would tackle the problem. “Mr. President, Anambra State is the state with the highest youth unemployment in the entire country and I am promising that if elected, I will tackle youth unemployment and ensure security of lives,” Mr. Nwoye said. “Sir, I would revitalise agriculture by building agricultural settlements in all the zones and construct standard hospitals in the three zones of the state.’’ Others who spoke at the event were Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu and Arthur Eze, both members of the PDP Board of Trustees as well as Margery Okadigbo.
