Prep basketball: Lelys Talko, Barrons Pagkanlungan, CSNs Merton, Nadeau honored at SFABC All-Star Game By DAVE MONTROSE Posted March 11, 2014 at 10:55 p.m. DiscussPrintAAA FORT MYERS — The area closed the book on another high school season on Tuesday night as the Southwest Florida Association of Basketball Coaches held its annual Boys and Girls All-Star Game at Bishop Verot. The Lee County team defeated a team made up of players from Charlotte, Collier, and Hendry counties, 87-59, in the girls game. The North Team — including Charlotte and northern Lee counties — beat the South Team — Collier and southern Lee, 89-74. In a ceremony between the girls and boys games, Lely shooting guard Nick Talko and Community School forward Jeff Merton were announced as finalists for Mr. Basketball in Southwest Florida. Barron Collier point guard Elizah Pagkanlungan and CSN guard Haley Nadeau were finalists for Ms. Basketball. “It’s a great honor,” Talko said. “I always wanted to be one of the finalists, so it was great to be one.” Talko hit a 3-point shot coming out of a timeout, and made a nice move, switching hands on a layup in the first half. He added a two-handed dunk to his nine-point effort in the second. Talko played with a businesslike intensity, even though the game was an exhibition. “I always like to play hard, get to the basket,” he said. “That’s how I play.” Talko is considering attending ELEV|8 Sports Institute in Delray Beach next year, hoping to gain exposure with college coaches. CSN small forward Drew Gendron hoped to impress college coaches in the building with a scoring surge in the second half, during which he scored 12 of his 15 points. He made buckets from near and far, hitting a 3-point shot and making a few moves on the dribble-drive. “We just tried to go out there and have fun,” said Gendron, who has offers from Division II and III schools. Golden Gate guard Garrett Maze, an Ave Maria recruit, drained 3 three-pointers in an 11-point performance. Pagkanlungan was so surprised to be named a finalist for Ms. Basketball that she did not initially know why her name was being announced. “To be named this is a great thing,” Pagkanlungan said. “I wasn’t expecting it at all.” She scored four points on a pair of layups, one of which came when Port Charlotte’s Taylor Lindsey made a steal and launched a pass down the court to an open Pagkanlungan. Though she had some volleyball offers, Pagkanlungan will not be playing college sports. Pagkanlungan had some company. Head coach Mike Hamburg was guiding the team, and her best friend, shooting guard Kacie Frost, was with her on the court. Frost led the Collier County players in the girls game with nine points. © 2014 Naples Daily News. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed.
