Prepare to be blown away by tonight’s hour-long Emmerdale, thanks to amazing performances from Verity Rushworth (Donna) & Mark Charnock (Marlon). A routine scan reveals that Donna’s cancer has spread & although she’d banked on having at least a year to spend with her daughter, she actually has mere weeks remaining. This devastating diagnosis hits Donna – & Marlon – like an express train & as Donna’s already-fragile resolve shatters in the face of this terrible realisation, so will your heart. Of course, we’ve known for ages that Donna is fighting a battle she just can’t win but the stark reality of what the doctor tells her is a particularly brutal wake-up call & the way Mark & Verity play their scenes from this point forward is so perfectly pitched, viewers will surely be knocked for six. The much-loved pair have worked together for a long time & it really shows. The depth of their on-screen partnership shines through the screen & consequently, in spite of the deep sadness of the episode, it’s one that shouldn’t be missed. If the awful consequences of Donna’s illness hadn’t fully sunk in before now, then they will tonight. Mark & Verity are so convincing, you’ll really feel their plight.
