Pres. Obama is making a speech tonight about the Islamic state. I listened to a piece on NPR this afternoon about young Paul Libertarian Republicans who are wary of foreign intervention. It just makes me sigh. Im not one of those hippy-dippy anti-war idealists; but Im not a mindless war-monger, either. Im someone who gets tired of pointing out that if we -- as Americans -- are so obsessed with our own national primacy on the global stage (leading the world in freedoms, technology, commerce, etc.), then we have to make our peace with oppressing others for our own comfort. If we have found the last decade-plus of war so tiring and unworthy of our efforts, that also means we have to be OK with not being the worlds police force; we have to be OK with not peeing on every natural resource in the world, claiming it as our own; we have to be OK with letting other nations internal politics unfold as it will. Now Just War, that is an interesting concept; invasion for humanitarian purposes, then you get my attention. We will see what Barry O has to say tonight. I hope I wont be sighing.
