Preseason favorites San Mig Super Coffee and Barangay Ginebra San - TopicsExpress

Preseason favorites San Mig Super Coffee and Barangay Ginebra San Miguel battled to a 92-all deadlock during a tune-up match yesterday at the packed Ronac Arts Center in San Juan City. Just like in their previous encounters during the regular season, the two popular teams engaged in a tight battle with Joe Devance of San Mig nailing the final count with 16.9 seconds left in the game. Ginebra’s Mark Caguioa had a chance to restore the lead for the Kings, but his attempt was short, the ball recovered by the Mixers. San Mig Coach Tim Cone called for a timeout with 3.4 seconds to set up his team’s final play. However, the lob pass of Devance to Justin Melton – a Slam Dunk co-champion during last year’s All-Star Weekend – was too high and went out of bounds with 1.9 ticks to go. In the return play, Joseph Yeo made a bad pass to Caguioa as time expired. San Mig remains winless in seven preseason matches, including 0-5 against Korean club teams in Seoul last week. Ginebra, on the other hand, is 1-6. Japeth Aguilar led Ginebra with 22 points, while incoming sophomore center Ian Sangalang collected 14 points for San Mig. Though it was just an exhibition encounter, supporters of both teams flocked the small venue as some 200 fans watched from deck section that can only accommodate about 50 persons, while others watched from outside the glass doors of the gym. Ginebra will play on opening day of the Philippine Cup set Oct. 19 opposite rival Talk ’N Text, right after the Kia Cars versus Blackwater game at the 55,000-seater Philippine Arena in Bocaue, Bulacan. Grand Slam and defending all-Filipino champion San Mig, on the other hand, will start its “drive for five” title bid on Oct. 22 when it takes on Alaska at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
