Arent the boys playing soccer ? * Present Progressive Tense is used to indicate an action taking place at the moment of speaking. Ex : You are reading about Present Progressive Tense. Wali is writing a letter. Note : The adverbs now, slowly, gradually, quickly, and rapidly are some adverbs that occur with the present Progressive Tense. They are inserted in the middle of the auxiliary and the main verb. Ex : He is slowly falling in the love with his neighbors daughter. Afghanistan is now going towards development. Is your brother always practicing the lessons? * indicates an action that is taking place around the moment of speaking. Ex : Student: Oh, Hi sir! what are you doing? Teacher: Oh, Hello....well, I am teaching present Progressive tense. (But at the moment I am talking with the student, I was teaching before the students meeting and I may start teaching it after the student leaves.) * Declares an action that might not necessarily by taking place around the moment of speaking. Ex : Friend 1: Hello Nasir, what is your father doing nowadays? Friend 2: Well, he is working in (UNAMA). (He might have gone on a three-month- vacation to kabul. * Used with future time expressions ( tomorrow, the coming day/month/season/year, next semester and etc) to talk about future. Ex : I am going for computer science to London the next year. My uncle is coming from kabul next week. * Used to talk about changing circumstances. Ex : Ahmad is getting fatter day by day. The population of Afghanistan is increasing year by year. * Simple Present Tense is used to talk about habits. However, if talking about a habit that continues to happen for example, in spite of advice or warning;we, then, use the present Progressive tense with an adverb like always, continually or constantly. Ex : I always tell Nasir not to smoke; but he is always smoking. ( Shows a sort of displeasure) a: for most verbs add merely ING. Wait=> waiting Beat=> beating Drink=> drinking b: if a verb ends in-e, omit the- e and add ING. Come=> coming Have=> having Ride=> riding Use=> using C: if a verb ends in a single consonant by a single vowel, double the last consonant and add ING. Hit=> hitting Let=> letting Put=> putting run => running d: if a two syllable verbs the last syllable is stressed the last consonant is double. Forget => forgetting Prefer => preferring Upset=> upsetting e: if a two syllable verbs first syllable is stressed the last consonant remains the same. Benefit=> benefitng Differ=> differing Profit=> profiting f: if a verb ends in-ic it is changed into-ick and ING is added. Panic=> panicking Picnic=> picnicking Traffic=> trafficking g: if a verb ends in - ie - ie is changed to- y and ING is added. Lie=> lying Die=> dying Tie=> tying * words called action verbs ( Verb which shows an action not a state) may appear in either simple or progressive tense, the meaning differs. Ex : He lives on Kunduz Road. (S fact) He is living on Kunduz Road. (Now or temporarily) The sun is setting. (Now) The sun sets every day. (A fact) Following are some ACTION VERBS: ask, gather, jump, , make, fix, cook, , get, kill, murder. * words called NON ACTION VERBS: usually occur only in the simple Present tense. Ex : I am a student. This costs a lot. I love him. * However, when we wish to express a temporary feeling, anger or surprise, we use certain non action verbs in the present Progressive tense. Ex : Khairullah is a good boy. But he is being naught to day. (Be=> Temporary)(for a short period). * Following are some NON ACTION VERBS : ▶Verde of perception: see,her, smell, notice, recognize . ▶Verbs of appearing:appear, look, seem. ▶Verbs of emotion:want, wish, desire, feel, like, love, hate, hope, refuse, prefer. ▶Verbs of thinking:think, suppose, believe, agree, consider , trust, remember, forget , know , undertand , imagine , mean, mind. ▶Have:(=possess),own, possess, belong to, contain and consist of Wrong: The grapes are tasting sour. I am thinking you are wrong. She is looking sad. He is having a cell phone. Right: The grapes taste sour. I think you are wrong. She looks sad. He has a cell phone. * However, the above stated verbs can be used in progressive form with a distinction in meaning. Ex : They are having lunch. (Have=eat).
