Presenting at a conference this spring. Sound familiar? Time to refresh the research!: Poverty can have an insidious effect on the developing child’s brain, disrupting social, emotional and intellectual growth with risk factors ranging from malnutrition to chronic stress. While these children fail to thrive within the confines of traditional education, the arts have demonstrated the ability to enhance even the most at-risk child’s ability to learn. Advances in neuroscience are beginning to explain why by investigating the impact of arts on the brain. After an introduction to current research, this presentation will focus on how the arts can be used to strengthen attention and memory networks, develop good habits of mind and communicate non-verbally. (The nerd in me is actually excited about this!)
