President BARACK OBAMA may wonder, next Monday when he visits the Netherlands (for the World Nuclear Top conference), what this picture is all about: The Cow represents the Calvinist, Dutch Republic, who had declared its independence from the Roman Catholic Kingdom of Spain, 1581). Well with the current political upheaval in Eastern-Europe (around Ukraine) this surely is interesting. The picture shows a tiny part of Europe (i.e. our country, The Dutch Republic, 1584) trying to make arrangements about her Sovereignty, with the King of France (pulling at the cows tail) and Queen Elisabeth I (of England, who feeds straw to the Cow = The Dutch Republic). Willem of Orange, who hold the cows horns, tries to keep calm and the Spanish Kings military representative in the Low Countries, the Duke of Alba, is milking the Cow... with King Philips II sitting on this impatient dairy animal. Briefly President Obama, together with our King, Koning Willem Alexander, will consider this scene and then also think, possibly, of the USAs Independence from England. When these two heads of state visit the Amsterdam Rijksmuseum they will surely have a soliloquy about this relevant, European history and present situation...
