President Honours Scholars for Contribution to Classical Tamil for Years 2009-10 and 2010-11 The President of India Shri Pranab Mukherjee today gave away the ‘Presidential awards of Classical Tamil’ to eminent scholars at Rashtrapathi Bhavan. The awards were given away for the years 2009-10 and 2010-11. The awards were presented in three different categories – Tolkappiar Award, Kural Pitam Award and Young Scholar Award. The Tolkappiar award is a lifetime achievement award given to Indian scholars for their outstanding contribution in the field of Tamil studies. Dr. Iravatham Mahadevan from Chennai was presented the Tolkappiar award for the year 2009-10 and Prof. Tamizhannal Periakaruppan from Madurai was awarded for the year 2010-11. The award includes a certificate of honour, a memento and a cash award of Rs. 5 lakh. The Kural Pitam award for eminent scholars of non-Indian origin was presented to Dr. Jaroslav Vacek from Czech Republic for the year 2009-10. The award includes a certificate of honour, a memento and a cash award of Rs. 5 lakh. The Young Scholar award is given every year to five scholars in the age group of 30-40 years for excellence in Tamil studies with publications. A total of 10 young scholars, all from Tamilnadu received the awards for the years 2009-10 and 2010-11. The awardees include Dr. T. Suresh, Dr. S. Kalpana, Dr. R. Chandrasekaran, Dr. Vaani Arivaalan, Dr. C. Muthamizhselvan, Dr. T. Sangayya, Dr. A. Jayakumar, Dr. A. Mani, Dr. S. Chidambaram and Dr. K. Sundarapandian. The award includes a certificate of honour, a memento and a cash award of Rs. 1 lakh. The Presidential awards for Classical Tamil were instituted to give due recognition and honour to distinguished scholars who have made outstanding contribution to Classical Tamil language and literature. The Central Institute of Classical Tamil under the Ministry of Human Resource Development gives away the awards every year.
