President Ian Khama swore in, the newly appointed members of the Independent Electoral Commission yesterday. Government says the Judicial Service Commission met on August 29, to appoint new members of the IEC. Judge Abednego Tafa was sworn in as the the chairman and other members include, John Carr- Hartley, Shaboyo Motsamai, Alpheous Matlhaku, Molefe Phirinyane, Agnes Setlhogile and Martha Sayed. The President further indicated that Botswana had extended an invitation to SADC to observe the general elections. He further highlighted that there could be further requests for observer status from other international organizations, as well as local NGO’s. Meanwhile, in South Africa the #IEC chairperson, Pansy Tlakula yesterday resigned from her post. In June, the Electoral Court recommended the IEC chief be removed from her position. Both Public Protector Thuli Madonsela and the National Treasury had found irregularities in Tlakulas procurement of new offices for the commission.
