President Koroma Appoints New NEC, NATCOM Commissioners, Chief Justice The office of the President Friday 23rd January 2015 announced the appointment of Mohamed Nfah Alie Conteh as Chairperson of the National Electoral Commission (NEC). The same press release also confirmed that Chief Justice Umu Hawa Tejan Jalloh will proceed on leave to retirement 6th February 2015 while Justice Valesius Thomas will act as Chief Justice. The press release also confirmed the replacement of Dr. Tom Obaleh Kargbo as Chairman of the National Telecommunications Commission (NATCOM) to be replaced by business magnate, Momoh Konte. The appointment, according to some political analysts, is part of the structural reforms by the President to ensure efficiency in governance. The retirement of the Chief Justice in particular attracted a lot of debate in legal circles prompting some renowned legal luminaries in the persons of Charles Francis Margai, Dr. Buakei Jabbie and Joseph F. Kamara to question the Office of the President for retaining the Chief Justice after reaching the retirement age of 65. The replacement of Dr. Christiana Thorpe who conducted two successful national elections was lauded by the public because she honourably left office after the expiration of her two terms some time ago. According to the press release, the appointment of Mohamed Nfah Alie Conteh came after consultations with political parties. The substantive Chair has worked at the Commission for several years in top management positions and was part of the team that successfully conducted the 2007 and 2012 general elections. Momoh Konte, the New NATCOM Chairman is a household name in his district of Koinadugu especially during the fight against Ebola. He has played a critical role in the socio-political development of that district and the country to the extent that some are describing him as a philanthropist.
