President Koroma Calls for Effective Coordination To Finally Eradicate Ebola By State House Communications Unit President Dr Ernest Bai Koroma had long realized that without letting local authorities take responsibility and ownership of the fight against Ebola, the disease will be difficult to eradicate. For this reason he has again engaged stakeholders of Tonkolili district to scale up and redouble efforts to control the virus and ultimately eradicate it from Sierra Leone. Yesterday, he was in Kambia and Port Loko where he emphatically urged stakeholders to make judicious use of the increased capacity now available in country in defeating Ebola as well as the need for effective coordination at district level. Today, President Koroma will engage Tonkolili and Bombali with pretty much the same message to fend off what he described as an evil virus. Making a presentation on the status of the district response, District Coordinator of the National Ebola Response Centre (NERC) Mohamed S. Bah said that new cases of Ebola are decreasing rapidly all over Tonkolili, although three chiefdoms still remain hot spots - Yoni, Gbonkolenken and Kholifa Rowalla. Delivering his keynote address, President Koroma commended Tonkolili for the progress made so far in the fight against Ebola. He noted that now that the facilities and capacity have increased, the people should take total ownership and personal responsibility to curb the further spread of the virus. He urged the people of Tonkolili to sustain their efforts and continue to be vigilant as one case of Ebola has the potential of destabilising the entire country. Now more than at any time we have to coordinate our efforts to maximize efficiency, he warned. The president also expressed the need for people not to be complacent as We are now at a very crucial point in the fight against the disease, and added that the national response appears to be getting ahead of the virus. He admonished those who are still in the habit of denial by hiding people with signs of illness to ensure they report to the nearest health facility in order to stop the transmission of the disease. He also cited Pujehun as a shining example of a district that has achieved the 42 days period without any new case. President Koroma said that he was anxious to resume the sustainable development of the country and therefore called on the people to translate their commitment to end Ebola into action. He further admonished male survivors and lactating mothers to observe the stipulated 90 days abstinence period. This, the president said, is unacceptable and warned that the law will take its course against male survivors who fail to observe the 90 days period. ©SHCU 2015
