President Obama Promises Action to Vreate New Jobs & Grow the Economy in 2014 President Obama used his State of the Union Address last night to highlight the actions his administration will take to create new jobs and help the economy grow in 2014. The President spoke of tax reform, international trade, and economic disparity and security. He expressed a willingness to work with Congress on those of his ideas that require congressional action. But America does not stand still – and neither will I, he said. So, wherever and whenever I can take steps without legislation to expand opportunity for more American families, that’s what I’m going to do. President Obama called on Congress to pass comprehensive tax reform. Let’s work together to close those loopholes, end those incentives to ship jobs overseas, and lower tax rates for businesses that create jobs here at home, the President said. President Obama suggested that revenues that come with tax reform should be used to build new roads and ports. I will act on my own to slash bureaucracy and streamline the permitting process for key projects, so we can get more construction workers on the job as fast as possible, the President said. The Republican response to the State of the Union Address is not encouraging. Clearly there is much division among our elected leaders. Rep. McMorris-Rodgers (R-WA) delivered the official Republican response and said that the President’s promises sound good, but would not solve the real problems facing Americans. House Speaker Boehner (R-OH) agreed and said that President Obama is clearly out of ideas. With few bipartisan proposals, Americans heard a President more interested in advancing ideology than in solving the problems regular folks are talking about. Instead of our areas of common ground, the President focused too much on the things that divide us and warnings of unilateral action, Speaker Boehner said. Senate Majority Leader Reid (D-NV) praised President Obama for having described the progress made by the nation and for having pointed the way to where the nation needs to go. Giving hard-working Americans a raise by increasing the minimum wage is a good place to start, the Senator said. Sen. Schumer (D-NY) agreed and said The President’s speech shows that he gets it. Helping the middle class will supersede every other issue in November. Hopefully 2014 will be a breakthrough year, as President Obama suggests and not more of the same partisan gridlock.
