President Obama has authorized airstrikes against ISIS militants - TopicsExpress

President Obama has authorized airstrikes against ISIS militants in Iraq if necessary to prevent potential genocide against religious minorities. Speaking from the White House tonight, the president also announced that the U.S. is conducting a humanitarian aid drop for thousands of religious minorities stranded on a mountaintop after Islamic militants forced them to flee. “When we face a situation like we do on that mountain, with innocent people facing the prospect of violence on a horrific scale, when we have a mandate to help, in this case a request from the Iraqi government and when we have the unique capabilities to help avert a massacre, than I believe the United States of America cannot turn a blind eye,” he said. Obama added that he will not allow the United States to be “dragged into fighting another war in Iraq.” For the past month, ISIS militants have gradually taken control of Iraq’s largest cities like Mosul and are closing in on Baghdad. The terrorist group threatened Christian residents to leave, convert to Islam or die, which led thousands civilians to flee from the region.
