President Obama has called for the establishment of a super-fund - TopicsExpress

President Obama has called for the establishment of a super-fund of $263 million dollars to procure, equip, and train urban and suburban police departments with mobile camera devices to be worn by police officers in the normal conduct of their duties. Many police departments, and most interesting, a number of Police Officer Associations, have decried what they describe as an unwarranted intrusion into their professional activities. I predict the Republican Congress will roundly disparage this proposal as racist and divisive, which is code for it being contrary to the wishes of their white support base. Introduction of body cameras worn by officers on the street would mean the end of racial profiling and police brutality, or at least, a curtailment of it in circumstances in which the evidence would point to officer induced violence. Of course, the officers would likely take the camera off as they stopped people and leave it running on the seat by accident. But watch to see how the Republican Congress and the Benevolent Police Associations weigh in on this proposal. In their responses we will discover their true feelings regarding their efforts to reduce the rash of police killings performed by cops in their official duties.
