President Obama usually complains about Republicans who say no to his agenda. However, it turns out key Democrats oppose his call in the State of the Union for Congress to work with him on free trade agreements, a pro-growth policy most Republicans agree with. Specifically, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid announced his opposition to giving a fast-track approval procedure in the Senate for trade agreements. The fast-track would only allow a yes or no approval vote, excluding any amendments. Without such an approval procedure, trade agreements would likely die, since no country wants to negotiate on a treaty subject to amendment in the Senate. Unions usually oppose free trade agreements, and this opposition points to a division within the Democratic Party - between those who want to promote free trade, and those who are beholden to the Unions.
