President Uhuru Kenyatta made a surprise visit to Kibera slums to inspect National Youth Service cleanup and rehabilitation project launched in September. Kenyatta had just landed from Addis Ababa in Ethiopia where he was for two days negotiating a truce between rebels led by Riek Machar and government forces. Dressed in jeans and a red cap, Uhuru mingled easily with the crowd with minimum security in tow. He greeted a young boy here and an elderly woman there. Uhuru made hisfirsttour of the Kibera slums in Nairobi on September 19 to launch the clean-up of informal settlements by the National Youth Service. Kenyatta inspected the works by over 600 NYS servicemen helping clear blocked drainage and collecting garbage to help improve sanitation. Kenyatta, who was touched by the filthy situation in Kibera and other informal settlements, said the national and county governments will work together to improve the living conditions of slum dwellers. Kenyatta said the sanitation programme undertaken by NYS graduates will engage the local youth to develop and transform them into productive citizens. “We want to improve Kibera slum that had been neglected for a long time. The residents also have a right to better services,” Kenyatta said. Kenyatta has also donated a posho mill for a youth group in the area.
