Presidents Message The Ancient Earthworks Society of Wisconsin - TopicsExpress

Presidents Message The Ancient Earthworks Society of Wisconsin (AES) has a clear mission: documenting, preserving and honoring effigy mounds and other fragments of our prehistoric past. I want to outline a few of the ways we hope to advance these goals in the months ahead. First, I’m pleased to report that the IRS recognized AES as a federally tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization in August, which enables us to seek tax-deductible grants to promote our goals more aggressively. The AES Board is developing plans to seek substantial funds to enable us to work directly with mound owners, public officials, archaeologists, surveyors and others in a focused project to document and protect Wisconsin’s fragile cultural heritage. Second, AES will sponsor educational member meetings each month from September through May. Our meetings are generally at 10:30 AM, third Saturday at Elie’s Family Restaurant, 4102 Monona Drive in Madison (followed by lunch) and will feature presentations by archaeologists, geologists and others with relevant expertise. Due to scheduling issues, our September meeting will be on the 4th Saturday – September 27 at 10:00 AM. Our presenter will be archaeologist (and AES’ Archaeological Advisor) Kurt Sampson. Third, we will share our knowledge and enthusiasm about the mounds with our neighbors in community-based educational settings and via our website and printed media. Finally, we will organize field survey, documentary research, administrative support and other teams to accomplish these goals. All members will be encouraged to contribute. We will discuss these opportunities and explore options at our monthly meetings. I’m looking forward to another year of learning and exploring – and to helping lead Wisconsin’s efforts to preserve our cultural heritage.
